Co-operative Associations, Federations, and Centrals

The co-op movement is represented by a number of associations, federations, and central organizations.

I will certainly be referring to these as time progresses, but I wanted to create a posting where you could find the bulk of the information pertaining to Canada.

Introduction to "I Heart Co-ops!"

I am creating this blog as an attempt to create a resource for both myself and other young or emerging leaders in the co-operative or credit union sector. I think there is something very empowering about the Co-operative Sector; it is about the PEOPLE, not the bottom line. People coming together to meet a need.

Since I was introduced to the Co-operative Movement in 1999 at the CYL Program, I have learned a lot about this business model, movement, and way of life. It is very fulfilling to be part of the worldwide spirit of co-operation.

I was very fortunate to participate in a six month CCA internship in Ghana, West Africa as the Youth Savings Officer at the Ghana Co-operative Credit Union Association. This gave me a whole new appreciation for co-operation as I got to see first hand the impact that it has on lives in the developing world.

The more I learn about Co-ops and Credit Unions, the more excited I get. There are so many great projects and initiatives taking place, but there is still certainly work to do. As a sector, we need to implement tangible youth strategies to ensure that our Co-operative and Credit Union sectors are still thriving in generations to come.

I hope to use this space to share with youth, and the young at heart, various websites and resources that are available to you.
This can include:
- Volunteering opportunities
- Employment opportunities
- Chances to sit on a Board of Directors
- Financial literacy tools (Budgeting, RREPs, RRSPs, etc.)
- Events taking place in the Co-operative sector
- Various blogs, videos, pictures, and campaigns

I hope that this site provokes thought and allows some of our emerging leaders to formulate ideas and contribute to the youth strategies being implemented in Ontario Co-ops and Credit Unions at this present time. I am also hoping that this site can illustrate how information can be spread online to present to CEOs and Boards of Directors to get the message across that it is crucial to connect with young people online. So send this to your friends!
